Objectively the Most Comfortable Bench for Working at Heights

This time I don’t want to write about a new product, or something trendy, or an innovative device that dramatically changes the workflow. Instead, I want to talk about a seemingly ordinary piece of your equipment – one that, in my opinion, has undeservedly received too little attention but is definitely worth discussing.

Yes, today I want to talk about work positioning benches, share my personal experience with different models from various manufacturers, and explain why I consider the Ledge from Rock Empire to be the most comfortable one on the market.

Why the Bench is so Important

A work positioning bench is primarily needed to prevent the harness straps from excessively compressing your legs during long periods of work at height. In the upper part of the thighs, near the pelvis, lie the largest blood vessels in the body. If these are compressed for too long, the brain lacks oxygen, which can lead to loss of consciousness and, if no one rescues you in time, even fatal consequences.

International regulations allow working without a bench for up to 30 minutes, but personally, I would never recommend taking that risk. Using a bench protects not only your comfort but above all your health.

Experience with Different Benches

  • 2015–2016 – a homemade bench made of plywood, rope, and foam. My safety awareness was minimal back then.

  • 2019–2021 – my first purchased bench, P***zl Podium – lightweight, well integrated into the P***zl Astro system.

  • Since 2021 – the C*C Skysaddle – larger and heavier, but significantly more comfortable than P***zl. I even managed to break one.

  • I also had experience with models from S*****g R**k and B**al, and I still own a bench for the P***zl Volt system.

These experiences gave me a basis for objectively comparing the new Ledge from Rock Empire.

Rock Empire Ledge – First Impressions

Honestly, I used to overlook the Ledge – I associated Rock Empire more with sport than with industrial rope access. But during testing, it surprised me:

  • Advantages
  • Wide and comfortable seating surface.

  • Low weight.

  • Not 2 but 4 gear loops, angled for convenience.

  • Small pockets on both sides – ideal for small items (screws, rivets).

  • Very comfortable for long work, e.g., window cleaning.

  • Disadvantages
  • Straps that are too long and sometimes get in the way. They can, however, be shortened easily.

  • Orange textile parts get dirty quickly and lose their appearance. Black would be more practical, but I understand this is part of the brand identity.

Final Evaluation

I have been using the Rock Empire Ledge bench for just over a month, and I already consider it the most comfortable bench on the market in 2025. It is not perfect, it has some small flaws, but no other model currently offers such a combination of comfort, functionality, and availability. So if someone asked me today which bench I recommend, without hesitation I’d say: Ledge. And if it ever fails me, I will let everyone know. Finally – please, do not underestimate your health and safety. Never work on a rope without a bench. Take care of yourself and your loved ones.
