Review of the TWIN belay device by Rock Empire (source: bergsteigen.com)
Test of the Twin by Rock Empire
We took a closer look at the Twin by Rock Empire...
The TWIN is a widely used belay device, especially for multi-pitch routes. There are countless versions – adjustable tubers like the Giga Jul, or models for ultra-thin ropes like the Micro Jul.
The Czech hardware manufacturer Rock Empire has added a well-thought-out little feature to its tuber: a "double" attachment loop. This extra loop is a big advantage when you need to clip the Twin Tuber into a belay anchor with a ring – a common setup in Elbe Sandstone and on many multi-pitch routes in Arco.
thanks to the variable clipping option, climbers gain extra flexibility when setting up the tuber for belaying a second at a fixed anchor.
Due to its stable side position, the rope runs smoothly through the Twin , even when used with ring bolts, and doesn't rub against the rock.
Whether you're clipping into a bolt, a bolt with a ring, or just a ring, the Twin can always be securely and properly positioned.
Aside from the double loop, the Twin doesn't differ significantly from other belay devices. It's built solidly and is easy to handle. The only limitation is that it doesn’t work with very thin ropes – it’s designed for diameters from 7.8 mm to 10.5 mm, and won’t function well below 7.8 mm.
We’ve been using the Twin for about a year, and apart from the major benefit of clipping into rings, we’ve noticed no difference compared to other tuber-style belay devices.
The 90° rotation feature works very well – you get the hang of it quickly, and the device almost always sits correctly in the anchor.
In terms of weight, it’s only slightly heavier than the competition (e.g., 3 grams more than the ATC Guide by Black Diamond), and its price range is comparable.
Conclusion from bergsteigen.com:
A well-built tuber-style belay device with a clever extra feature that sets the Twin apart from others.
